Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black male, was brutally beaten by five Black Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers on January 7, 2023, when they were conducting a traffic check. Nichols was taken to the hospital and later passed away three days later.
Nichols was allegedly stopped by the authorities for driving recklessly.

They took him out of his car and shocked him with a taser and pepper spray. Throughout the incident, Nichols was able to flee. When police caught up with Nichols, they beat him for about three minutes while he was being detained, punching and kicking him in the head and hitting him with a baton on the back.
The five policemen were fired on January 20 after investigations were launched by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice.
Following the release of this police body camera footage and additional surveillance film on January 27, the MPD released four edited video snippets from January 7 showing various incidents between 8:24 p.m. and 9:02 p.m. There were also several demonstrations in response to the publication of these videos.
