Interestingly enough, one of the genes that determines a person’s handedness is also linked to a person’s reading ability. A 2014 review published in Trends Molecular Medicine by William M. Brandler and Sylvia Paracchini, suggests that it is possible that being left-handed could be linked to a higher chance of having a condition like Dyslexia.
Are There Any Advantages to Handedness?
Being a right-handed person has its advantages considering we live in a world that is designed to benefit right-handed people. Take for example using a computer mouse. They are designed for someone who is right-handed.
The main clicker to be used by the index finger is on the left-hand side, whereas the less frequently used right-side popup button is on the left. This made using a computer mouse difficult for lefties for the longest time until a left-handed mouse was invented and software for reversing the keyboard on laptops was created.
Using scissors is another area where being right-handed is an advantage. Most scissors are designed for right-handed use. The same goes for sports equipment. While being left-handed is actually an advantage in sports, finding the proper equipment can be a challenge. In sports like golf, fencing, and hockey, lefties need to have equipment that is made for a lefthander. Although a southpaw may be able to find left-handed equipment, the selection is often small.

While Rihanna is not left-handed, there are a lot of fashion icons who are. For starters, the fashion designer Ralph Lauren is left-handed. In 2018, he partnered with the New York Yankees to create a limited edition line. In order to promote the line he threw the honorary first pitch at a Yankees versus Red Sox game. His pitch is left-handed.
Another popstar and fashion icon would be Lady Gaga. The New York born singer is left-handed. Like Rihanna, she is known for her impact on the fashion world, usually for wearing more out there outfits. Some of those out there outfits included her dress made of meat.
The French haute couture fashion designer and icon, Jean Paul Gaultier, is another southpaw. Gaultier is most commonly known in the fashion industry for his use of unconventional styles and models.
